Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety & Risk Conference 2026

  • 20 - 22 October 2026
  • Sonesta Hotel Houston, Houston, Texas

Wenco is presenting at the 29th annual Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety & Risk Conference, hosted by the Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Center at Texas A&M University. The conference brings together process safety researchers, engineers, and operators from across the oil and gas, chemical, and maritime sectors.

Seeing Fatigue Before It Becomes Failure: Real-Time Fatigue Monitoring from Commute to Control Room to Reduce Risk in Oil and Gas Operations

  • Wednesday, 21 October, 1:30-2:00PM
  • Apollo Room, Operational Risk Management session
  • Authored by Dr. Emily Tetzlaff, Wenco's Principal Scientist, EHS
  • Presented by Jason Bollinger

About the session

Highway vehicle incidents are the leading cause of death among oil and gas extraction workers, accounting for roughly four in every ten fatalities in the sector (OSHA, citing the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries). Long distances to remote sites, irregular hours, and extended shift schedules build that exposure into how the work gets done.

Most fatigue controls detect the problem late. Vehicle telematics register a driving behaviour after it has already degraded. Journey management works from a schedule rather than from the individual. Self-report depends on the one person least able to judge their own impairment.

This session examines what changes when fatigue is measured physiologically rather than inferred from behaviour, across three settings: long-distance commuting to and from drilling sites, well servicing work, and sustained-vigilance control room monitoring. It covers the detection gap between physiological and behavioural indicators, how EEG-based monitoring layers onto an existing fatigue risk management system, and the trust, privacy, and governance conditions that determine whether these programs hold up in the field.
